Club says it will re-bid to become the anchor tenant for the stadium after the Games

West Ham football club has confirmed it will re-bid to become the anchor tenant of the Olympic stadium after the Games.

The West Ham United Football Club’s vice chairman Karren Brady said today that the club would submit a bid to become the long-term tenant of the stadium by today’s deadline set by the Olympic Park Legacy Company.

In a statement, she said: “From the outset it has been my firm, unwavering belief that the stadium can truly become a multi-use destination of which east London and the nation as a whole can be proud.

“I have never lost sight of our vision to play our part, along with the stadium’s major stakeholders, in ensuring it grows into a global asset, the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Park that will be watched by the world.

“We have not taken this decision lightly and I should be clear that any move to the Stadium is conditional on the fact that it must provide an arena that is fit for world-class football and feels like home to our deserving fans.”

The original deal for the club to take over the stadium was scuppered last year after an anonymous state aid complaint was made to the European Commission about the deal.

Earlier this year it emerged that architect Steve Lawrence was source of anonymous state aid complaint about the stadium legacy plans.

A final decision on the permanent tenant for the stadium is expected in May.
